Switch Insights

"Instrument everything" the consultants advised.  You will need the data eventually.

But is this good advice?  Excessive instrumentation causes three main problems

1.  Reliability engineers know that the more devices in a system (for example, more instruments and sensors) , the lower the overall reliability rate.

2.  More data yields more insights that require more decisions and action (see yesterday's blog: Data Anxiety)

3.  And finally, in the face of the constant drum beat of how AI is superior to humans in most tasks, we humans begin to doubt our ability to make good decisions by ourselves.  So, faced with a decision, we hesitate.  And, in many situations, this delay creates more problems.

So, instrument enough, but not everything.
